Minecraft Helps Young Tasmanians Shape Launceston’s Future

Thanks to our members TASSIC for the case Study!
A creative project is using Minecraft to give young people a voice in the future of Launceston, transforming the city’s 3D spatial data into interactive virtual worlds where students can explore, create and share ideas.
Working with partner Esk Spatial, the project used spatial data and FME software to convert Launceston’s parks, landmarks and public spaces into realistic Minecraft environments. The approach allowed children to engage with city planning in a familiar digital setting while providing valuable community feedback.
The results were significant. Youth participation increased more than 90-fold compared to traditional consultation methods, with over 800 students from 20 schools taking part during National Science Week.
Participants shared ideas on issues including public space design, homelessness and flood mitigation, with artificial intelligence used to analyse responses and identify key community themes. The insights are helping inform future planning decisions while ensuring younger voices are included in conversations about the city’s development.
The downloadable Minecraft worlds have since received national recognition and industry awards, highlighting how digital technologies can create more inclusive, engaging and effective community consultation.
