Australia’s National Cyber Security Coordinator will open the TasICT-AISA Cyber Security Conference in Hobart on 21 August 2025 – giving Tasmanian businesses prime insight into current threats and tips on staying cyber safe.
In her first official visit to Tasmania since her appointment as National Cyber Security Coordinator, LTGEN Michelle McGuinness will deep dive into her role to lead the Australian Government’s response to significant cyber incidents and provide insights for businesses to respond and bounce back when an incident occurs.
Official data from the Australian Signals Directorate identified it received more than 36,700 calls to its Australian Cybersecurity Hotline in 2023-2024, an increase of 12% from the previous financial year. ASD also responded to over 1,100 cybersecurity incidents.
At a time when the rate of industrial cyber crime is increasing, with high-profile company data theft and cyber-attacks a constant threat, hearing firsthand from the Coordinator will be invaluable for individuals, businesses and government representatives.

Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness, CSC was appointed as Australia’s National Cyber Security Coordinator (the Coordinator) on 26 February 2024.
As the Coordinator, LTGEN McGuinness leads whole-of-government coordination of the delivery of the Strategy, the coordination of responses to significant cyber incidents, whole of government cyber incident preparedness efforts, and the strengthening of Commonwealth cyber security capability.
LTGEN McGuinness has served in the Australian Defence Force for 30 years in a range of tactical, operational, and strategic roles in Australia and internationally. Prior to this appointment, LTGEN McGuinness most recently served as Deputy Director Commonwealth Integration in the United States Defense Intelligence Agency. In this role, she led policy and cultural reform, and technological integration, including interoperability across information technology, systems and data.
