  • Government presiding over a technology black hole
  • No roadmap to the future
  • Cyber security concerns

Labor says the chronic underinvestment by this government in technology and communications exposed in today’s Public Accounts Committee should sound alarm bells for Tasmania’s digital future and cyber security.

Shadow Minister for Information, Communication and Technology Michelle O’Byrne said it beggars belief that the government has done so little to equip Tasmania for the digital age.

“The committee heard how Tasmania is ranked behind every other state and territory when it comes to digital readiness and online access, especially for government services.

“Labor supports calls from TasICT to see a clear roadmap from government on how it intends to bring the state and especially government agencies into the 21st century.

“This is holding our state back and we’ve heard nothing from the minister Michael Ferguson on how he intends to lift the state out of this digital hole.

“Worse still is that the Tasmanian government has left us totally exposed to cyber attack.

“Now more than ever people need to be connected and their information secure.

“Michael Ferguson must detail not just what he plans to do to dig us out of this hole but the funding and timeline to achieve it.”
